The acclaimed 32-voice ensemble of Melodia Women's Choir, led by Artistic Director Cynthia Powell, joins electro-acoustic duo, Flutronix, and a stellar ensemble of instrumental players to present a dynamic and appealing, all-American program this spring that encompasses never before heard work from award-winning composer Christina Whitten Thomas, as well as celebrated favorites from Meredith Monk, Ned Rorem, and Charles Martin Loeffler.
The centerpiece of the program is the world premiere of "Mornings with You," a commissioned work through Melodia's own Women Composers Competition series by composer Christina Whitten Thomas. Described as "imaginative," "beautiful" and "rare" by Harry Saltzman of the New York Concert Review, Whitten Thomas's work is an intricate fusion of the traditional and innovative, the contemplative and dynamic, which culminates in exciting but masterful arrangements. Hailing from the New England, Whitten Thomas's work often invokes the serenity and beauty of the Northeast. Here the lyrical melodies of the romantic "Mornings with You" for flute, clarinet, French horn, piano and women's voices, is set to sensual, evocative poetry celebrating the intimate and sun-lit moments of being together by Brooklyn-based author, poet and musician Pam McAllister.
Melodia continues to expand conventional boundaries of choral music, featuring an instrumental interlude by Flutronix (Natalie Joachim, Allison Loggins-Hull), a classically-trained flute duo recently dubbed "post-minimalist and techno-influenced" by Frank Oteri of NewMusicBox. Tracks from their highly-praised 2011 self-titled debut CD can be heard at Flutronix.com.
